What is the lifespan of a pair of Phoenix Berkey filters?

A pair of Phoenix Berkey filters can treat up to 22,710 litres of water, a limit not to be exceeded.

As a guide, the Berkey manufacturer bases its estimate on an average usage of around 10 years, with an average consumption of 5 litres per day, to estimate a theoretical filter lifespan.

This duration remains indicative. The quality of the filtered water as well as the daily quantity of water consumed directly influence the actual lifespan of the Phoenix Berkey filters.

How to check the condition of your Phoenix Berkey filters?

Method 1 – Red dye test

The red dye test allows you to reliably determine whether your Phoenix Berkey filters are working correctly.

If the filter completely eliminates the red food colouring, it means it is still capable of filtering contaminants effectively.
If a red colouration appears after filtration, this indicates that the filters have reached the end of their useful life or are not correctly installed.

⚠️ This test does not apply to fluoride filters.

Method 2 – Flow rate observation

After each cleaning, observe the flow rate of the system.
As the filters approach the end of their lifespan, cleaning allows the original flow rate to be restored less and less.
